Maintenance Person - St. David Church and School

​

St. David Catholic Church and School in Davie, Florida is hiring for a full time Maintenance Person with construction experience, to assist in the construction, maintenance, improvement, repairs, traffic, equipment, structure, lighting, electrical and grounds facilities of the church, school, parish office, hall, and priest’s residence. The employee will assist with custodial tasks as needed, as well as emergency plans and preparations in the event of natural or man-made disaster. The maintenance person reports to the Plant Manager/ Director of Maintenance and performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.

Hours: 7:00am – 3:30pm, Monday – Friday.

Essential Functions include:

​

  • Maintenance of all parish and school facilities, including the routine inspection of the grounds, installations, and equipment to determine necessity of repairs, maintenance, or replacement.

  • Assists in the building and grounds improvements that ensures that the facility’s appearance positively reflects and enhances St. David parish and school in the community; including construction work on new and existing buildings and facility repair.

  • Maintains electrical power systems, including Uninterruptible Power Supply and Power Distribution Systems and consults with IT staff or service providers to ensure that facilities power meet demands and new specifications as needed with changing technology.

  • Works with plant manager/maintenance director, pastor and principal to ensure that systems are in place for business continuity in the event of interruption.

  • Learns and adheres to the stipulations of OSHA, the Uniform Building Code, local zoning and fire code regulations.

  • Purchases building and maintenance supplies and equipment as instructed by the Plant Manager/Maintenance Director if needed.

  • Serves as active member of carnival committee.

  • Repairs or replaces defective parts, equipment, and structures; and reassembles equipment, using hand or power tools. Approaches repair work critically to ensure that the repair is best solution, and recommends better alternative solutions or approaches, if applicable.

  • Diagnoses mechanical problems and determine how to correct them.

  • Replaces small components and parts in electrical devices (lamps, light bulbs, sockets, etc.)

  • Performs tasks to accomplish special projects (building, reallocation of office space and furniture, etc.) according to work orders.

  • Completes tasks according to appropriate specifications, standards/best work practices and within scheduled parameters.

  • Reviews own work upon completion of each job to ensure that installed components, repairs and built projects are functioning according to expectation.

  • Cleans air-conditioning systems and changes filters monthly or according to determined schedule.

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and to prevent deterioration of buildings/structures.

  • Performs routine inspections of equipment, fluid levels, etc., following checklists.

  • Stores chemicals, paints, liquids and hazardous substances with their respective MSDS (material safety data sheet) and new product documentation.

  • Prepares and breaks down meeting and event rooms and areas by arranging furniture and heavy equipment according to specifications in work order. Completes on schedule.

  • Uses tools such as drills, saws (table, jib, manual), compressors, hoists, wrenches, precision measuring instruments, and electrical and electronic testing devices. Uses hand trucks and dollies for transport.

  • Performs all work according to safe work practices and reports any hazards to supervisor. Locks out and tags tools, equipment, or areas of vulnerability (i.e., electrical outlets) as needed to maintain safety.

  • Uses personal protective equipment properly when required by OSHA or on own initiative, when hazardous conditions are evident.

  • Disposes of waste according to policy.

  • Reads and interprets plans, blueprints, schematics, and other facilities-related documents needed to perform tasks.

  • Performs tasks with minimal interruption to normal workflow patterns of parish business.

  • Participates in emergency backup plans and procedures, including disaster recovery/business continuity plans, as required by pastor.

  • Takes inventory and orders supplies on a regular basis, exercising cost-consciousness.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

​

  • High-school diploma or G.E.D and ten years’ related experience/ training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Technical or trade school coursework in building technology and/or HVAC preferred.

  • Experience in risk management required.

  • Valid FL driver license and automobile insurance.

  • Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

  • Experience in the use of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures.

  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.

  • Knowledge of arithmetic and applications required for the tasks.

  • Operation monitoring skills in watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.

  • Troubleshooting skills in determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.

  • Ability to build productive relationships and practice accountability for the quality of work for the parish community.

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, MSDS, Hazard Communication labels and safety warnings.

  • Good oral and written English-language communication skills. Spanish oral skills are also helpful but not necessary.

  • Basic PC skills, including ability to navigate the Windows OS, enter data into system and perform e-mail functions in MS Outlook, required.

  • Must be able to lift and move heavy (50 pound) objects.
