Summer Reading Grade 8

“Reading is the gateway for children that makes all other learning possible” - Barack Obama.

Reading is one of the most important and fulfilling means to master the tool of language and prevent summer slide . Reading at any age not only helps children learn new vocabulary and ways to express themselves; but also teaches new concepts, allows them to better understand emotions, and enhances their imagination.

As your child moves into Eighth grade, we have selected the following list of books that will hopefully inspire your child to explore, engage in conversations, ask questions and continue reading independently. As you review the book list you will see that eighth graders have the book We Beat The Streets by Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, Rameck Hunt and Sharon Draper as their mandatory summer read.

Summer 2024 List Coming Soon!

Mandatory Assignment

Once your child has completed reading the book, your child must pick one activity to complete from the 8th grade choice board  below. All projects are due on the first Friday (August 18th) back at school from Summer break. Please read activity descriptions and information on any materials needed to complete it. Some activities may use any form of materials, recycled goods, paper products, modeling materials, electronic platforms, building blocks, art materials, etc. to complete the projects. Get as creative as possible!

We have included parent resources and conversation starters to help further conversations and help them learn and grow. We hope you enjoy their book list and choice board for our 2023 “Dive Into A Sea of Reading.
